Department for Business, Innovation & Skills [External website]
For organisational purposes and resourcing, Government Skills became part of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) upon its creation on 5 June 2009. Prior to that Government Skills was part of the Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills since 1 April 2008. Previously it was part of the Cabinet Office. The move to BIS creates a stronger alignment with the team of ministers and officials charged with economy-wide skills policy, putting Government Skills in a better position to drive forward the Skills Strategy.
Government Skills continues to work closely with:
Civil Service Capability Board
The Civil Service Capability Board oversees the work of Government Skills.
The Civil Service Capability Board exists to enhance the effectiveness of the public service through learning and skills development. It does so by acting on behalf of the Civil Service leadership to provide direction to cross-civil service work on learning and skills development. It facilitates joined-up working on the Skills Strategy for Government and the Core Learning Programme, drawing together the work led by Government Skills and the National School of Government.
