Use the PSG skills identifer to find the right skills

Government Skills recently launched a new PSG skills identifier online tool.

It is designed to be useful to individuals, line managers and HR professionals to easily locate the competency frameworks for leadership, core skills and professional skills at any grade and profession in the Civil Service. Most departments have incorporated PSG into their departmental competency framework, so users will find the PSG skills identifier a useful resource for general information about PSG.

The Professional Skills for Government competency framework (PSG) is a structured way of thinking about skills and jobs for in the Civil Service at all grades.

There are three components and one supporting principle to the PSG competency framework:

The PSG skills identifier tool will show the leadership and core skills relevant to each grade and job role. It will also show the additional professional skills needed to do the job on a day-to-day basis.

The tool was built with assistance of the professions community in government and was launched following user testing to ensure it is easy to use and understand.

Judith Black from the Northern Ireland Civil Service said:

“It is logical and intuitive to use. All the information about PSG and professional skills is in one place.”

As the skills body responsible for central government, Government Skills is the guardian of the PSG framework on behalf of the sector.
