The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has been judged a regional finalist for the Apprenticeship Awards 2009, held by the Learning and Skills Council. MoJ's entry for Employer of the Year in the macro employer category (over 5000 employees) was marked very highly.
MoJ has been committed to getting involved in the Government Skills National Apprenticeship Pathfinder.
Apprenticeships were attractive to MoJ because they offered staff in frontline delivery roles the opportunity to develop skills and gain nationally recognised qualifications.
From modest plans to introduce 100 apprenticeships, the eventual uptake in 2008/09 was 364. More than 200 of the 364 apprentices took up customer service apprenticeships.
On business and administration apprenticeships there has been a very close alignment between the training received through the apprenticeship and improving competences required by the business.
MoJ linked the introduction of apprenticeships to two objectives:
The successful uptake of apprenticeships through the Government Skills National Apprenticeship Pathfinder has meant that MoJ is looking to increase its use of apprenticeships.
Government Skills wishes MoJ well for the Awards taking place on 16 July 2009.
