Simon Waugh has been appointed the first chief executive of the new National Apprenticeship Service (NAS). The NAS will deliver an expanded apprenticeship programme and will provide a single point of contact for employers who want to offer apprenticeships and for prospective apprentices.
The new Children, Skills and Learning Bill announced in the Queen's Speech will give all suitably qualified young people a legal right to an apprenticeship from 2013. It also sets out in legislation the rights and responsibilities of the new National Apprenticeship Service.
Skills Secretary John Denham said:
“Simon Waugh has a wealth of experience from the private sector and will bring clear leadership and a valuable new eye to the National Apprenticeship Service. Our plans for apprenticeships are truly ambitious. We want to see many more young people and adults having the opportunity to undertake an apprenticeship and know the new service will make it easier for employers to offer them.”
