Diploma in Public Services

The Diploma in Public Services is a new qualification for young people aged 14 to 19 to prepare them more effectively for employment, further education or higher education. These are a key aspect of the Government's reform programme for 14 to 19 year olds.

The Diploma will be delivered in schools, colleges and other educational institutions in England. During their studies most students will have the opportunity to experience different learning cultures in the various institutions across the partnership.

The Diploma in Public Services will be available through selected providers across the country from September 2010 and will be offered to all 14 to 19 year olds in England from 2013.

It will give students a pathway into a range of careers in the public sector, including central and local government, the health service, the Armed Forces, the emergency services, the justice system and voluntary organisations.

Every department, with no exceptions, can play a role. I want to see young people given practical opportun- ities to 'learn the trade' in our departments. We can also help to inform work right across the country, as we have such a widespread presence.

It can also facilitate progression into further or higher education (dependent on entry requirements and grades achieved). All Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have said they will consider applicants who have achieved an Advanced Diploma and over 80 per cent of all courses offered are open to achievers of a Diploma.
