NVQs and SVQs

National Vocational Qualifications (in England, Wales and Northern Ireland) and Scottish Vocational Qualifications (in Scotland) are based on National Occupational Standards.

NVQs and SVQs are intended to:

• equip employees to carry out a particular role
• allow them to develop broader transferable skills.

The qualifications can be delivered within the workplace or in partnership with an external provider and are based on an employee's normal work activities.

The five levels of qualifications cover the following types of skills.

• Level 1 – basic, routine and repetitive work skills
• Level 2 – broad range of skills including non-routine activities and individual responsibility
• Level 3 – supervisory skills
• Level 4 – management skills
• Level 5 – senior management skills
