The apprenticeship pathfinder programme has exceeded its target and offered more than 500 apprenticeships in central government, after receiving almost 1,300 applications.
The first groups of apprentices started their programmes in management, customer service and business and administration on Wednesday, 24 September 2008. The majority of apprenticeships will start before the end of October 2008.
An apprenticeship offers training leading to recognised qualifications including NVQs at Level 2 or 3.

Government Skills has been working closely with the Learning and Skills Council, which has agreed to provide funding for the apprenticeships undertaken through the pathfinder. As the Sector Skills Council for Central Government, Government Skills is also working with departments to deliver the pathfinder as part of the drive to increase apprenticeships in the public sector.
Government Skills will evaluate the programme to assess how well apprenticeships meet the needs of employers and individuals, with a view to identifying how to further support the drive to increase uptake in the public sector.
