A significant number of adults in Scotland do not meet employers' skills criteria, including requirements for literacy and numeracy. The Scottish Adult Literacy and Numeracy Strategy (launched in 2001 and to be refreshed in 2008) has enabled 180,000 individuals to improve their literacy and numeracy.
Skills for Scotland: A Lifelong Skills Strategy (2007) sets out aspirations for a smarter Scotland. By addressing the particular challenges of investing in skills and business growth and creating the appropriate conditions for these to flourish, it helps to drive the step-change needed in economic growth.
